The history of the 3G Exhaust Ball begins with Mona, a 1978 Mooney M20J purchased due to its low time (500 hours) logged on the engine. She primarily flew in the Sierra Foothills and the Arizona desert, but after several partial power events, we uncovered something a little problematic. Mona’s motor kept failing due to corrosion from years of unchecked engine condensation. Examination of the engine revealed extensive damage. Moisture was entering through the tailpipe after each shutdown, exposing the cam and other parts to corrosion and slowly eroding the engine. What we initially thought was fuel issues turned out to be a completely shot engine.
From Experience to Innovation
As you can imagine, we didn’t want to see Mona's new engine suffer the same fate. So we turned our attention to similar systems and solutions used in the motorsport world and developed the patented 3G Exhaust Ball. The goal was to:
· Reduce aircraft engine corrosion
· Prevent damage from shock cooling
· Extended time between overhauls (TBO)
· Lower maintenance costs
· Expand engine lifespan
The 3G Exhaust Ballwas developed based on a costly lesson with Mona and real-world experience from pilots and mechanics. Had she already had the 3G Exhaust Ballwhen we purchased Mona, she wouldn’t have needed a full overhaul.
